Get Organized: Pack your hurricane kits now and be ready

Marla Ottenstein Posted June 2, 2011

It’s that time of year again when I run around shopping for flashlights, batteries, canned food, bottled water and a bunch of other things in case of a hurricane. I’m always afraid of forgetting something; do you have any suggestions?

In addition to the essentials, your plan should include a list of "must-dos" and "must-haves."

Is pompano the next big thing?

 fish_MarineFarmsVietmanCages

By Mike Urch, SeafoodSource contributing editor June 6, 2011 -

Pompano (Trachinotus blochii) is now being farmed in Vietnam. Very popular in Asia, the white-fleshed fish is being trialed in Europe and the United States with encouraging results. Marine Farms Vietnam carried out a small test last year when it successfully reared 50,000 pompano. This year it will farm 1 million fish, according to Carlos Massad, CEO of the Vietnamese subsidiary.

Pompano is a deep-bodied silver-colored fish that is found in tropical shallow waters worldwide. Asian consumers love the fish. The fish are being presented whole, gilled and gutted, ready for grilling. "There are very few pinbones so the meat comes out very easily when grilled,"

The pompano are farmed in floating cages in Van Phong Bay, a sparsely populated area 50 kilometers north of the coastal city of Nha Trang. The fish take four to five months to reach a harvestable weight of 400 grams. This year, they were reared from fingerlings imported from Taiwan. This is the same site where Marine Farms Vietnam has been farming cobia since 2005. "The two species are farmed in tandem," said Massad. "It gives us two legs to stand on." As for cobia, it’s selling very well. "I wish I had more to sell," he added.

Wal-Mart Shifts Strategy to Promote Healthy Foods

By SHERYL GAY STOLBERGPublished: January 20, 2011

WASHINGTON — Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer, will announce a five-year plan on Thursday to make thousands of its packaged foods lower in unhealthy salts, fats and sugars, and to drop prices on fruits and vegetables.Enlarge This Image

Michelle Obama, the first lady, has joined the company’s effort to get consumers to eat healthier foods.

The initiative came out of discussions the company has been having with Michelle Obama, the first lady, who will attend the announcement in Washington and has made healthy eating and reducing childhood obesity the centerpiece of her agenda. Aides say it is the first time Mrs. Obama has thrown her support behind the work of a single company.

The plan, similar to efforts by other companies and to public health initiatives by New York City, sets specific targets for lowering sodium, trans fats and added sugars in a broad array of foods — including rice, soups, canned beans, salad dressings and snacks like potato chips — packaged under the company’s house brand, Great Value.

Sunscreen benefits beat risks in pregnancy: MDsCBC News

Posted: May 25, 2011

Pregnant women should not be scared of using sunscreen to protect themselves from skin cancer despite safety concerns raised in animal studies, Canadian doctors say.

The July issue of Consumer Reports includes sunscreen ratings based on protection from UVA and UVB rays that cause sunburn, and tests of water resistance claims. The article also raises questions about potential harmful health effects on a fetus from a compound found in some sunscreens called retinyl palmitate. Canadians are advised to choose a sunscreen that is water resistant with an SPF of at least 30.Canadians are advised to choose a sunscreen that is water resistant with an SPF of at least 30. John Russell/Associated Press

"Retinyl palmitate (look for it among inactive ingredients), a type of topical vitamin A, is an antioxidant that animal studies have linked to an increased risk of skin cancers. In skin, it converts readily to retinoids, associated with a risk of birth defects in people using acne medications containing them. As a precaution, pregnant women may want to avoid sunscreens with retinyl palmitate," the magazine said.

"More research is needed, but as of now, the proven benefits of sunscreen outweigh any potential risks."
