Naples: Clam Pass Beach -where you can ride the tide - literally
NAPLES — I live five minutes from Fort Lauderdale beach, but I think Clam Pass Park is so special I have driven across the state for a day at this Gulf coast beach.
The Gulf coast of Florida has some spectacular beaches, but this one is not widely known. Clam Pass Park is a Collier County park, hidden away off Tamiami Trail where only the locals and visitors to the posh Naples Grande Beach Resort know about it. We discovered the Clam Pass Park on a weekend getaway when we stayed at the resort on a summer rate sale.
I love how you reach the beach — it feels like the start of an adventure. You can walk or take a free tram from the parking lot down a three-quarters-mile long boardwalk through a mangrove forest.
From the shady mangrove tunnel, you emerge on a sunny day to a beach with sand that is blindingly white and water impossibly turquoise. But that’s not the only thing we love about Clam Pass Park.
On the other side of the pass, the beach stretches on for miles, lined with seagrape trees and foliage. Visitors thin out after a short distance, so if you dream of having a beach to yourself, this is for you.
For the young and the young at heart, ride the gentle rapids (currents). "Shoot the shallows as a neapolitan may say. A strong tide can produce currents 3 + Knots. For you land lovers, that's 4 - 5 mph. A nice ride!
My friends, that is a excellence way to spend a summer's day or for that matter any day. But there's more...
Because this is the beach for the Naples Grande Beach Resort, regular folks benefit from exceptional amenities intended for hotel guests. There’s a little cafe with sandwiches and drinks. A concession stand rents chairs, umbrellas, Hobie cats and more.
Parking at Clam Pass Park is $8, and there are 175 spaces that can fill up.
