Sand storm: Plan to renourish Collier County beaches faces rough waters COLLIER COUNTY — A proposed project to put more sand on Collier County's beaches could be headed for some rough waters as debate heats up over its cost.

County commissioners voted 4-1 on Tuesday to seek permits for a $31 million beach renourishment project. But the size of the project could be smaller, depending on how much funding is available when the project is set to get started in 2013.

In a bid to extend the time between projects to 10 years, the larger project would add 63 percent more sand to beaches in Naples, Park Shore, and Vanderbilt beaches than the last beach renourishment in 2006.

Extending the Closure of Snook Fishing Season

For two years now, as a result of a devastating freeze in Florida, we have been unable to keep snook for the dinner table. If you were familiar with catching the fish, you more than likely stopped fishing for them as soon as the freeze happened. You didn't need anybody to tell you not to fish for them. Your gut instinct was to protect them.

A few months later, FWC wisely established an official "closure". A Closure of that sort still allows us to catch them, but we are required by regulation to release them. How you release them to ensure the highest possible "post-release survival" rate, and reduce the post-release mortality is arguably the single most important thing you can learn about snook, and that's how to gently release them with wet hands, and never ever to pull them out of the water to hang in front of a camera lens for longer than a few seconds.
