Debate on Everglades drilling revived by Bachmann

EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK, Fla. (AP) — Out here, in the middle of the swamp, dragonflies circle and egrets glide above. When the airboat stops, a blissful quiet falls over Florida's Everglades, little more than the sound of gentle raindrops landing on still waters pierced by sawgrass.

It is a one-of-a-kind place known for alligators, marshland and mangroves. But could it be known instead for tankers, rigs and oilmen?

September Sunset /Full Moon Paddle Saturday, September 10, 2011, 5:45 PM

SELECTED BY: DANNASanibel Causeway South Side McGregor Blvd, Fort Myers, FL (map)

We will meetup at the launch before the Sanibel Causeway and paddle to Bowditch Point to watch the sunset. As usual, we'll picnic on the beach...bring food, drink, chairs, etc. The paddle back will be at night with the (almost) full moon so bring lights for your kayak. A headlamp or flashlight will be sufficient. This paddle will be approximately 8 miles and is for intermediate to advanced paddlers. There are no rentals at this site.

We'll meet on the left side of Summerlin/McGregor right before you get to the toll booth for Sanibel. You need to make a right turn at the light as if you are going to Sanibel Harbor Resort and then make a U-turn and head back onto Summerlin/McGregor. The launch site will then be on your right. If you don't, you may end up having to go through the toll booth and paying just so you can turn around. And yes, they will make you pay! :)

Kayak paddle and water gun fight on the Estero RiverSaturday, September 17, 2011, 11:00 AM

SELECTED BY: ROBERTEstero River Outfitters20991 South Tamiami Trail , Estero, FL (map)

Call me with any questions [masked]SELECTED BY: ROBERTLets get together for some fun in the Florida sun on the water. Estero River is a nice easy paddle even for a beginner. We can either head inland through the narrow tree covered and scenic twists and turns of the tail end of the river or head towards the gulf where it is more wide open with a few parks along the way we can stop at. I have paddled both directions and both make for a great trip. Last time I headed inland there was a cool rope swing to play on for those who dare. :) Make sure to bring plenty of water (or any other beverage of your choice), sunscreen, snacks, water shoes, and definitely dont forget your water guns so we can cool eachother off during the paddle!! They usually have some pretty cool water guns for sale in the rental shop just incase you forget to bring one. For those of you that do not own a kayak rental prices are $17.50 for 2 hrs and additional hours are an extra $5.00 or an extra $10.00 for a full day rental. We will meet at Estero River Outfitters and launch right from there. Visit their web page for full rentel details

    Hope to see everyone there!!!
